Keep your family safe and call Pinnacle Power & Air for an obligation-free quote about the new smoke alarm legislation.

Old ionisation smoke alarms have outdated technology and may not allow time for you and your loved ones to evade the fire.

If you are looking to Lease or Sell your property in 2022 the new legislation states you must have:

  • hardwired photoelectric, interconnected smoke alarms. Non-removable 10-year battery smoke alarms can be installed in place

  • Smoke alarms in the dwelling must:

    • be photoelectric (AS3786-2014); and

    • not also contain an ionisation sensor; and

    • Be hardwired to the mains power supply, if currently hardwired. Otherwise, smoke alarms can be either hardwired or powered by a non-removable 10 yr battery or a combination of both.

    • be interconnected with every other smoke alarm in the dwelling so all activate together.

  • The legislation requires smoke alarms must be installed in the following locations:

    • on each storey

    • in each bedroom

    • if there is no hallway, between the bedroom and other parts of the storey; and

    • if there are no bedrooms on a storey, at least one smoke alarm must be installed in the most likely path of travel to exit the dwelling.

Queensland has introduced the most stringent laws in the country. Since the 1st January 2017 all homes approved for construction or substantially renovated are required to have additional alarms fitted to each bedroom and interconnected throughout the entire house. In 2022 it will become mandatory to retrofit smoke alarms to each bedroom and interconnect to the rest of the house for all rental properties and properties sold.

This same requirement will be extended to all properties by 1st January 2027. Alarms retrofitted into existing properties may be powered by a 10y non-removable battery or hard-wired unless it is a significant renovation then it must be hard-wired. Only photoelectric alarms have been permitted since 1st January 2017. (Referenced from Master Electricians)
